~~~ Excerpt and Review for Sweet Fall by Tillie Cole ~~~
Excerpt One
Three hours later, and we’d won. Carillo had scored three touchdowns and the Tide took the W from the Mocs—the perfect season opener.
Within minutes, the crowd began to filter out of the stadium and the cheer squad ran back into the tunnel, high off the win.
Trailing at the rear, just taking in the scene, I was left alone. It was strange to see the stadium so quiet, kinda apocalyptic, like the aftermath of some great catastrophic event. Plastic red Solo cups were scattered in the stands, confetti strewn on the grass, and the thick stench of stale beer clung to the humid air.
“Kinda weird, huh?” a deep Bama-accented voice said from beside me.
Dropping my poms in shock, I laid a hand on my chest. Catching a flash of a Crimson shirt, I looked up, blocking the blinding sun from my eyes with my hand, and suddenly lost my breath.
“S-sorry, what?” I asked in a quiet voice, tipping my neck right back to be able to see the guy’s face.
When shade hit, he appeared. Austin Carillo, wide receiver, number eighty-three.
Carillo stepped closer to me from his secluded spot beside the players’ tunnel and the stands. “This. The quiet after the storm.” He gestured to the empty stadium with a wave of his hand. “It’s my favorite part of the game.”
I followed the action of his hand. “Not the three touchdowns you scored?”
The corners of his mouth hooked up in a reluctant smirk. I’d seen Carillo around campus from time to time over the past three years, and I think it was the first time I’d ever seen him crack anything close to a smile. I wasn’t surprised. He was like me—darker, quieter, kept to himself.
Austin Carillo was the Italian bad boy of UA: six-foot-four, beautifully olive skin, piercings galore, black ear gauges, neck-to-toe tattoos, dark hair and the darkest of brown eyes.
I felt myself blush. If I had a type, he’d be it. But I didn’t date, and from what I’d heard, neither did he.
“Nah. It’s this. The replay of the game in my mind, the making of memories on this field.”
A sense of peace floated over me at what he described. “I know exactly what you mean,” I replied wistfully and inhaled the smell of greasy food, churned-up grass… victory.
Austin glanced back to the tunnel and, without another word, began to saunter away. I stared back out onto the gridiron and sighed in relief… I’d done it. I’d actually made it through a game unscathed.
The voice within hadn’t had the strength to spoil it.
“It’s about fuckin’ time, by the way!” I suddenly heard and looked behind me, straight at Carillo.
“Are you talking to me?” I asked in confusion, checking around us to see if anyone else was here.
Austin smirked in a deliciously dark way and gestured to my hair and face. “Yeah, I’m talking to you. It’s about time a pompom chick ’round here broke the mold. It’s good to have another one of us freaks on this team.”
One of us freaks? I thought, but all I could do was watch him disappear into the locker rooms. My heart pounded in my chest, and lifting my hand, I ran my fingers over my black hair and lipstick, and I felt a flutter in my chest… one of us freaks
Seeing the cleanup crew enter the stadium, I quickly bent down, plucked a piece of grass from the field, and held up the single blade. It was my tradition. A piece of memorabilia from every game I’d ever cheered… But this would be my first in four years.
The symbol of my new life.
Sweet Fall (Sweet Home, #3)Sweet Fall by Tillie Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In a heart wrenching story of addiction, overcoming it, and relapsing, Lexi just wants to be normal. No voices talking in her head about how fat she is and will always be. No gut wrenching loneliness behind the mask that she wears.
Born on the wrong side of the tracks and a member of the local gang, Austin broke out of that stereotype to play football for the Crimson Tide. He’s just trying to make it to graduation so he can become draft eligible and provide for his ailing mom.
This story was, for me, hard to read. The darkness that they both feel comes out and shows you how hard life really is for some. Fighting everyday to battle a demon in your head and heart drains all of the happiness way until you have an empty shell. Fighting to stop being a stereotype is always like an uphill battle. The love between the two was earned and well worth it. They connected and came together because of the situations they were both in. Forming a bond that only they could as broken souls, they came together. Love always wins and in this story it wasn't any different.
Sweet, dark, gritty, swoon worthy, raw, devastating and captivating, this novel has it all. The characters are amazing and feel like friends and family when you finish. I cried, laughed and pulled my hair reading this. As emotional as it was, I loved it for that reason alone. Pulling me in until I had to finish to see the outcome.
Thank you Ms. Cole, for sharing part of your life experience with us in such a public forum. May you always have sunshine in your life, no matter the circumstance.
COVER REVEAL - Susan Stoker Frozen Hearts
Synopsis:
Working as a camera operator for a hard-nosed producer isn't all fun and games. Kina is seriously thinking about making this reality show her last. She's known as being 'cold-as-ice' when it comes to men, which is appropriate since they're filming in Alaska. Before she can figure out what she wants to do with her life she had to make it through this show. The contestants aren’t exactly lumberjack material and the challenges range from ridiculous to downright dangerous.
The Alaskan reality show is Jonathan’s last gig before he goes to work in security with his brother. The shoot would be completely miserable except for the fact that the one woman in the world who is meant to be his is also a camera operator on the show. He has no idea how he’ll manage it, but he is determined to win her heart and convince her to move to Arizona to be with him.
Following in the footsteps of the contestants isn’t a walk in the park for the camera operators. Fighting boredom and drama within the crew, hiking across glaciers, and camping in the Alaskan wilderness isn’t as safe as it seems on television. An injury on the set will either bring Jonathan and Kina together, or tear them apart for good.
Excerpt:
He sat up, grabbed her by the shoulders and spun her around in the small space. Kina found herself on her back with Jonathan leaning over her. He slammed his lips down on hers once again and they battled for control. Kina wasn’t going to passively lie there and let Jonathan do whatever he wanted. She let her hands wander while their tongues dueled and their teeth nipped and pulled at each other. She worked her way under the back of his sweatshirt and under his T-shirt and let her nails lightly scrape their way up his back as far as she could get them to go. She whimpered when he drew back from her mouth to stare down at her.
He didn’t say a word, but he flattened his hand and drew it down over her chest, over her breastbone, over her bellybutton to the button on her jeans. He didn’t unbutton it, but worked her own T-shirt out of her pants and moved his hand underneath. God almighty. His hand was chilly from the morning air and she could feel the callouses covering the palm of his hand. He worked his way upward, never losing eye contact with her, until he reached her belly button. One finger swirled around it and lightly pressed in.
She couldn’t help it, the question just popped into her head and she couldn’t hold it back. “Would you rather have an innie or an outie?” She watched as Jonathan didn’t say anything, but smiled and dropped his lips back to hers.
As they kissed and continue to learn the contours of each other’s mouth, his hand moved upward again. He went as far up as the bottom of her bra then stopped, running his fingers over the bottom underwire sensuously. Over and over, his fingers caressed the skin just under her bra. Goosebumps rose all over her skin and she could feel his grin as he felt them too. Her nipples were hard and she swore she could feel them ache.
Jonathan’s long hair was hanging around them and Kina imaged how it would feel to have his hair brushing over her bare chest, as he suckled at her breasts. Her breath came out in short choppy pants.
Kina dug her nails into Jonathan’s lower back a bit harder, not hard enough to break his skin, but enough to let him know she was loving what he was doing to her body and what she wanted him to do to her body.
Just as Jonathan’s hands started to skim over the cups of her bra they heard, “Good morning!” ring out from across the clearing. Damn. Jonathan raised his head from hers and they both stilled. Kina couldn’t help but giggle. Jonathan shook his head and smiled down at Kina. “I did say last night, this wasn’t what I wanted to happen, but I can’t be sorry. You feel so good, hon. I can’t wait to get you alone.”
Kina slowly removed her hands from Jonathan’s skin soothing his skin where she’d dug her nails in and brought one hand up to his scruffy face. “I can’t wait either.”
Jonathan reluctantly slid his hands back down her belly and smoothed her T-shirt back down. He cupped her cheeks in his and leaned down to give her a sweet kiss on the lips. “As much as I want to feel your heat surrounding me, we’ll take our time. You deserve to be wooed.”
“Wooed? Who says that?”
“I do,” answered Jonathan with a smile. “Now, how about we get this show on the road? Eddie would have our heads if we didn’t get the guys’ morning routine on film.”
Kina nodded. As much as she wanted to stay in this little tent with Jonathan all day, they had a job to do.
About the Author:
Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Texas where she lives but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, and Indiana. She is quite the romantic and even met the love of her life on "Hotmail classified" before online dating and sites
like match.com even existed!
Susan has been reading romance novels since middle school and once crossed out the names of the main characters in a book and changed them to her own and to the name of her crush. She's been writing scenes for years, developing her unique writing style.
Susan loves writing but her true passion is adopting dogs from rescue groups and shelters. Susan and her husband have had a total of nine "rescued" dogs since 2000 including a variety of basset hounds and bloodhounds. She has recently branched out and adopted a basset/terrier mix who acts more like a terrier than a basset (i.e. digging, eating a couch and being hyper).
~~~ REVIEW AND Spotlight High Tide Bikini by Lyla Dune ~~~

HIGH TIDE BIKINI by Lyla Dune

HOT and HILARIOUS with HEART!

HIGH TIDE BIKINI (Pleasure Island, #3)
by Lyla Dune

Book Blurb:
Primary love story:
Dirk Davis is no knight in shining armor, more like gigilo in board shorts. Why twenty-five year old virgin Kendal Duvall has chosen to have a fling with him leaves him baffled. She’s the epitome of the wholesome girl-next-door. He is definitely attracted to her, but fears she’s luring him into a boyfriend trap. He’s never had a serious girlfriend, because he’s made taking care of his ailing father a priority, one that sometimes hinders his social life and stunts his ambitions.
Kendal Duvall has struggled to break free from her controlling mother and move past some dark memories. Now that she’s finally moved out on her, she’s ready to explore uncharted territory, bedroom territory. Who better to be her guide than the local playboy who is known for being both discreet and good in bed?
Secondary love story: At age sixteen, Spencer Harris was paralyzed from the waist down after a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Ten years later, Spencer tries to come to terms with her desire to have the happily ever after she’s always dreamed of and the reality of what that happily ever after may look like in her current condition. She has so much love to give but doesn’t want to put limitations or burdens on others.
Earl Washington is a ball of insecurities after spending some time in jail and being labeled a bad egg. He’s ready to take charge of his life and pursue his dreams, but he longs for the love of a good woman. Spencer is the woman he wants, but will she want him when she finds out his deepest secrets?
High Tide Bikini is the third book in the Pleasure Island series. It takes place on an island that is home to some zany characters, an ostrich farm, and a senior citizen nudist colony. If you like romance with plenty of sizzle and giggle, you’ll love this series.

How Sexy You Are (High Tide Bikini Teaser )

Kendal blew out a breath. “I’m out of shape. I guess.”
Dirk’s gaze slowly traveled the length of her body. “You’re far from out of shape.”
Was he suggesting being in shape was so far out of her reach it wasn’t even funny? She sucked in her stomach and tightened her jaw. “Don’t you start picking on me, Dirk. Not every girl is meant to be a toothpick.”
“Thank God for that. You don’t hear me complaining. What makes you think I’d pick on you about your figure?”
“Well, you pick on me about everything else.” She studied his face.
His mouth twitched like he was fighting back a grin. “Girl, you have no idea.”
“No idea about what?” Was he patronizing her? Was that a smug expression on his face or was he amused? Either way, his weird smirk annoyed her. “Since you don’t think I have any idea, how about you clue me in.”
A slow smile replaced his smirk, but he didn’t respond.
She reached out to shove his arm and demand he tell her what he meant by “no idea”, but when her fingertips touched his firm bicep, she froze. An unexpected surge coursed through her veins. Instead of shoving him, her hand lingered as if held in place by a magnet.
His eyes met hers. “You have no idea…how sexy you are.”

ABOUT LYLA
Lyla Dune has taught music for eighteen years, played saxophone and clarinet in numerous orchestras and ensembles, taught piano, written songs, and repaired more musical instruments than she can recall. Yes, in case you’re wondering, you can fix the rotary valve on a student’s French horn with a paper clip and a rubber band three minutes before the kid’s horn solo at Lincoln Center.
How did Lyla become a writer? A few years ago, she stumbled across a poetry forum online and dabbled in poetry for kicks. She became a word junkie. She’s published poetry, flash fiction, and short stories in many different genres.
She lives on the coast of North Carolina with her husband, Gary, and her cat, Miura. One day, she’d like to have a pet ostrich. She’d name it Robirrrda, after the ostrich in Low Tide Bikini.

High Tide Bikini (A Pleasure Island Romance #3)High Tide Bikini by Lyla Dune
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My favorite book in the series by far. In this book 3, of the Pleasure Island series, we get 2 love stories for the price of one.

Best friends since high school Kendal and Spencer both have their challenges in life. Kendal deals with a controlling mother who depends on her solely after her father left them. Spencer had been in a wheelchair since she was struck at the age of 16 by a drunk driver. This is the summer they both bloom in to beautiful women and start taking back their lives. Add in sexy surfer and all around good guy Dirk Davis, accompanied by still healing from his past, Earl Washington, and these 2 women will have an unbelievable break out summer. Sexy, funny and heartwarming, this book tells you a story about these characters finding themselves, learning to love with their whole being and to accept the past is just that, the past.

Taking you on an emotional roller-coaster with a plot twist that I never saw coming, this book was excellent. The writing flowed so well, even with the different stories going on. The emotions I went through to get to the end were all over the map. Happy, sad, angry, joy and delight followed me as I read this book.

I love this series and would recommend them to anyone looking for a sweet happily ever after that is sexy, steamy and laugh out loud funny.
Some of my favorite quotes are below. I give this a 5 star rating and hope that Ms. Dune has more up her sleeve involving the people of Pleasure Island.

“What are you wearing?”
That was the corniest line on the planet. Only creepy internet guys asked girls that. Did he think she was going to have phone sex with him? Well, maybe she was on the verge until he ruined the moment with that cheesy line. She pulled her dress back over her knees and crossed her legs. “The blood of the last guy who asked that stupid question.”

“You know what it’s implying. Now, would you please stop making like inspector 12 in the Hanes underwear factory and help me down from here?”
