Death of a Body – Rick Chiantaretto
“What if all religious were stories, and all stories were true?”
What a great way to set up a book. So different from my last book, I found myself captivated by the end of the prologue. This book is divided into 3 parts. Each dealing with Edmund and a series of events, if I talk about will give the best part of the book away, the surprise element and the twists you will just have to read it to figure out. Here’s the short low down.
Told from young Edmund’s point of view, this book explores what happens if magic really does exist. What would happen if you found yourself in someone else’s body one day? How would you react to having no memory of it at all?
Engrossingly written, Rick brings Edmund and his friends, Ralph and Haley to life for the reader. Edmund, his friends and family live in a place called Orenda. A magical place where they each have a power – Edmund has a close connection to the earth and can speak to the trees, Ralph’s is more things of spirit and Haley is more on the lines of science and physical. They are out gathering food for the day, when Edmund senses something very wrong happening. He asks his friends to stop so he can find a tree and speak to it. He needs to know what is wrong.
“I found a tree that called to me. It’s bark was gnarled and split with age but its dark green leaves boasted heath and fertility… the tree was inviting”
Upon finding this tree, she shows him that Orenda has been overtaken by an army of men. Joshua, the only Elder left contacts Edmund though his presence and begs them to come home as soon as the can. The trio races home to find the whole town is fallen.
As the story continues with twists and turns, you can’t even imagine guessing, you follow Edmund through adulthood. All these years, he has tried to figure out his past while living as a “human”. He is trying to solve a great mystery and it includes the church, travel though time, spells, a magic ring and a past Edmund can’t remember or explain.
I enjoyed this book, the twists and turns brought great satisfaction to me in the end. Rick tied all the loose ends neatly until the next book. A series I will recommend and a new author continue to follow.
